Collagen Scaffold Stem Cell Grafts Restore Vision in Rare Eye Disorder
A new stem cell treatment for aniridia-related keratopathy, a rare eye disorder, has shown significant vision improvements in a small trial. Published in JAMA Ophthalmology, the study utilized a collagen scaffold graft containing both limbal epithelial stem cells and stromal keratocytes. This dual-cell approach, termed RAFT-OS, addresses the failure of traditional transplants by providing the necessary structural and chemical support for cell survival. After an initial complication, the refined procedure resulted in normalized corneal surfaces for five of nine patients by month three. By month twelve, treated eyes showed dramatic health improvements compared to untreated controls, with participants gaining nearly five lines on standard eye charts. The technique suggests that transplanting cells alongside their local support system is crucial for regenerative success, offering hope for other severe eye conditions.
