Systemic antifungal therapy reshapes the gut microbiome in some IBD patients

A Nature Medicine study from Weill Cornell compared two weeks of fluconazole (systemic) vs nystatin (mouthwash) in 53 IBD patients with oral thrush. Fluconazole reduced intestinal Candida, remodeled gut fungal and bacterial communities, increased bacterial diversity and butyrate production, and was associated with lower disease activity and slower progression over eight weeks, unlike nystatin. The trial was not randomized or placebo-controlled, so findings are preliminary and justify a larger multicenter trial to confirm efficacy and explore broader patient applicability.

Fluconazole reshapes the gut microbiome and improves disease activity in IBD

In a prospective study of 53 patients with mild-to-moderate inflammatory bowel disease (UC or Crohn’s), fluconazole reduced gut Candida burden and reshaped the fungal community, triggering cross-kingdom shifts that increased bacterial diversity and boosted butyrate-producer and anti-inflammatory metabolites, correlating with improved disease activity over 8 weeks; oral nystatin did not have these effects, suggesting mycobiome-targeted antifungal therapy may help IBD management.

Microrobotic System Targets Fungal Infections with Precision.

Researchers have developed a microrobotic system that can rapidly and specifically eliminate fungal pathogens using nanozyme microrobots. The system uses electromagnetic fields to control the shape and movements of these nanozyme microrobots with great precision, resulting in enhanced catalytic activity and targeted reactive oxygen species generation. The nanozyme assemblies show a strong binding affinity to fungal cells, enabling a localized accumulation of nanozymes precisely where the fungi reside and rapid eradication of fungal cells within an unprecedented 10-minute window. This approach opens up a new frontier in the fight against fungal infections and marks a pivotal point in antifungal therapy.

Mexico-linked surgeries linked to deadly fungal outbreak in US

A second person has died after seeking medical treatment at a clinic in Matamoros, Mexico, linked to suspected cases of fungal meningitis, according to an updated advisory from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The advisory also warned that more than 200 people across the United States are potentially at risk. The potentially at-risk patients, who include men and women, are scattered across 24 U.S. states and D.C.
