Unraveling Earth's Atmospheric Secrets: From Ancient Mysteries to Modern Discoveries
Scientists have used synchrotron techniques to study apatite inclusions in zircon crystals from old magmas to gain insights into The Great Oxidation Event, a pivotal moment in Earth's history around 2.4 billion years ago when a significant amount of oxygen accumulated in the atmosphere. By analyzing the sulfur valence speciation in the apatite inclusions, researchers found that the redox state of the magmas changed after the event, indicating that sediments affected by an increasingly oxidized atmosphere modified the mantle. This study provides valuable information on the interaction between the atmosphere and Earth's mantle and opens up avenues for further research on other key periods in Earth's history.
