Google introduces automatic app archiving for Android to free up storage space.

Google has announced that its Android app archiving tool will now work automatically, saving up to 60% of space on devices. Auto-archiving removes the app install but keeps personal data in place, allowing users to re-download and pick up where they left off. To opt-in, users must try to install an app when there is no space left on their device. The feature is long overdue for Pixel devices that don't allow for SD cards, but it would be helpful if users could create a list of apps to exclude from auto-archiving.

Google introduces auto-archiving for unused Android apps.

Google has launched an auto-archiving feature for Android apps that removes more than 60% of an unused app's data from a phone to save storage space. The feature won't remove any user data and will mark the presence of the app with a cloud icon on the device. The feature will be available only for apps where developers use the App Bundle to publish their apps. The search giant first previewed auto-archiving in March 2022 by introducing a new app package format called Archived APKs.
