Nordic Efforts to Save Arctic Foxes from Extinction
Arctic foxes in Sweden, Norway, and Finland were nearly hunted to extinction, but conservation efforts, including breeding and supplemental feeding, are helping to restore their populations. The Norwegian Institute for Nature Research has been breeding Arctic foxes since 2005, releasing over 465 into the wild to bolster numbers. Climate change and competition from red foxes pose ongoing threats, but coordinated efforts across Fennoscandia have increased the population to over 550. The long-term goal is a sustainable population of 2,000, though continued human intervention may be necessary.
