"Article 45 Threatens to Undo 12 Years of Web Security Progress"

The EU is set to pass eIDAS 2.0, a new regulation that includes Article 45, which could roll back web security by 12 years. This article would prevent browsers from enforcing modern security requirements on certain certificate authorities (CAs) without government approval. This means that CAs appointed by governments could potentially intercept HTTPS communication, compromising the privacy of internet users. Browser makers may have to create separate versions of their software for the EU and the rest of the world. This move could limit competition among browsers to improve security and even ban the enforcement of Certificate Transparency, making government spying harder to detect.
