"Groundbreaking Sky Survey Reveals Pulsating Gamma Rays from Dead Stars"

A space telescope conducting a sky survey for gamma rays has identified 294 previously unknown powerful dead stars, bringing the total number of gamma-ray pulsars in the Fermi catalog to over 340. Pulsars are a subcategory of neutron stars that emit powerful jets of radiation and spin rapidly. Around 10% of known pulsars are gamma-ray emitters, and they can be used for various applications such as space navigation and detecting gravitational waves. The catalog also includes "spider" pulsars, where the pulsar absorbs material from a binary companion star. The researchers believe that more gamma-ray pulsars will be discovered in the future.
