Athena’s Owl Bowl Unearthed: A 2,000-Year-Old Roman Silver Vessel in a German Forest
A 2,000-year-old silver bowl with gold accents depicting Athena and her owl was found in the Hildesheim hoard near central Germany. Dating suggests the emblem dates to the 2nd century BCE and the bowl to the 1st century CE. As part of the largest collection of Roman silver found outside the empire, the hoard may have belonged to a Roman commander like Varus or represent booty stashed by Germanic tribes, highlighting cross-cultural ties at the Roman-German frontier.
