Rabid groundhog attack in NJ prompts public health warning
A groundhog in Mullica Township, New Jersey, attacked a homeowner and later tested positive for rabies, with the animal recovered on July 27 and its rabies confirmation reported on July 31. It is the county’s second rabies case this year, following a raccoon exposure in January. The incident involved one human exposure and two outdoor cats; the homeowner is receiving post-exposure treatment, and the cats are under observation. Rabies is fatal if not treated promptly, so medical attention after any animal bite or exposure is essential. Health officials stress keeping pets vaccinated, supervising outdoor pets, and reporting abnormal wildlife behavior to authorities to reduce risk.
