Promising Drug Halts Cancer Progression and Extends Lives in Small Trial
An experimental drug called ATX-101 has shown promise in halting the progression of many types of cancers in a small clinical trial. The drug targets a feature common to cancer cells in different organs, potentially revealing a crucial point of vulnerability for all forms of the disease. ATX-101 is designed to kill cancer cells while leaving healthy cells untouched, and can also re-sensitize cancer cells that have developed resistance to standard chemotherapies. The drug's Phase I trial showed that it was well-tolerated by patients and extended the lives of some participants by halting the progression of their disease for months or years.
