Germany's Former Spy Chief Hanning Detained in Historic Espionage Scandal
August Hanning, the former head of Germany's Federal Intelligence Service (BND), has been arrested on charges of treason and espionage. Prosecutors allege he purchased approximately 2,000 classified documents from a former aide, Manfred D, between 2010 and 2022. Hanning is accused of using this intelligence to draft analyses for foreign agencies in exchange for payment. The case, which emerged from an unrelated investigation into a child custody dispute, is described as Germany's most significant intelligence scandal since the Cold War. Hanning faces potential life imprisonment if convicted.
