The event also features a centipede division and unofficial traditions such as spectators tossing tortillas and runners in salmon suits "swimming upstream."

The Bay to Breakers footrace in San Francisco draws elite athletes and partygoers alike. New Star-Ell Liquor store on Divisadero and Fell Street is the last liquor store on the route, and owner Sameer Nasser and his partners have been running the store for 36 years, open through every Bay to Breakers during that time. Nasser says the most popular item is beer, and he stocks double the normal amount for the event. The store has three cash registers open and someone watching the door to control the crowd. Outside, a makeshift rave breaks out on the street as partygoers enjoy the event.

Thousands of runners, many in wacky costumes, participated in the annual Bay to Breakers footrace in San Francisco. Colin Bennie and Sarah Anderson were the fastest male and female runners, respectively, while Cal Calamia won the nonbinary category for the second year in a row. The race, which included a nonbinary category for the first time last year, saw an increase in registration with 17,000 runners. The event, which has been held since 1912, was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic.

Despite the foggy weather, thousands of participants took to the streets of San Francisco for the Bay to Breakers 12-kilometer race, with many opting for a leisurely approach in elaborate costumes and with alcoholic beverages.
