B.C. officials capture grizzly for DNA testing after fatal Bella Coola attack
Jennifer Balcarras and her daughter Selah Reed were killed by a suspected grizzly bear on the Snooka Trail in Bella Coola, B.C., in late October 2026. Conservation officers have captured one bear for forensic DNA testing to determine if it was involved in the attack or a similar incident from November 2025. The Nuxalk Nation has imposed a curfew and is providing mental health support, as the community grapples with a second fatal attack in the same area within a year.
