Variety argues that the Academy’s 2020–2024 Inclusion Standards would not have disqualified any of the 98 Best Picture winners—two of four standards (A: on-screen diversity; B: diverse creative leadership) apply to the film itself, while C and D pertain to the distributor’s current practices. Tested across all winners, zero would have fallen off the ballot, meaning most winners already meet the rules or satisfy them through the distributor’s programs. The focus is on leadership and pipelines, not retroactively barring past films, and Musk’s criticisms miss the point.
The 1989 film Driving Miss Daisy was a box-office hit and won Best Picture, but decades later its portrayal of racism has drawn sharp criticism and backlash, with critics like Spike Lee arguing it’s outdated and not representative of real schooling in film, leading to ongoing reassessments that label the movie as overrated or controversial in today’s context.

Teyana Taylor says a backstage Oscars 2026 security guard shoved her and blocked her from re-entering the stage for photos after her film won Best Picture; she called the guard’s behavior rude and claimed he put his hands on her. Gold Derby’s Oscar-season wrap identifies five takeaways: the Best Picture race now rewards titles with longer runway and sustained campaigning; a chunk of contenders launched early, shifting momentum away from late-year surprises; One Battle After Another and Sinners have dominated the conversation as frontrunners; campaigning strategy matters, with quiet, performer-led approaches often outperforming noisy campaigns; and while international contenders are more visible, the path to victory remains unpredictable, keeping room for surprises and new contenders.
