Arbour named Canada's next governor general, a bilingual jurist with global stature
Prime Minister Mark Carney named Louise Arbour, a bilingual former Supreme Court justice and former UN human rights commissioner, as Canada’s next governor general, succeeding Mary Simon. Arbour’s international prosecutions—including indicting Slobodan Milošević and securing a genocide conviction in Rwanda—and her UN tenure underpin her decades-long influence on justice. As governor general she will represent the monarch in Canada in a largely ceremonial role, typically for a five-year term.
