Early experiments in the space race era showed promise but faced challenges in maintaining balance and control. However, advancements in technology and the development of the MELiSSA system in 1987 have paved the way for more efficient and controlled bioregenerative life support systems, bringing us closer to building self-sustaining astronaut ecosystems on Mars.
