"Promising Link Found Between Whole Grains and Dementia Prevention"

A study conducted by researchers at RUSH University Medical Center found that older Black adults who consumed more whole grains experienced slower cognitive decline as they aged. The study, which focused on elderly Black residents, showed an association between higher daily servings of whole grains and lower levels of memory decline, equivalent to being more than eight years younger than those who consumed smaller amounts of whole grain. The findings highlight the potential benefits of whole grains in promoting healthy aging and may help healthcare providers tailor nutrition recommendations for different cultural backgrounds. Further research is needed to understand the specific effects of whole grains on cognition.

COVID pandemic leads to higher stroke death rates and highlights racial inequities in care.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released new data showing that the COVID-19 pandemic has widened disparities in stroke deaths among Black and white adults in the United States. Stroke deaths increased among all racial and ethnic groups, but at higher rates for minority populations. Black adults were 50% more likely to die from stroke than white adults, and for Black adults aged 35-54, the stroke death rate is 2.5 times what white adults in the same age range experience. The CDC identified several potential reasons for these gaps, including COVID-19's association with increased risk for stroke, disruptions to regular healthcare, and worsening mental and physical health due to the pandemic.
