Former Black Panther convicted of killing Omaha police officer dies in Nebraska prison

Ed Poindexter, a former Black Panther who maintained his innocence in the 1970 bombing death of a white Omaha police officer, has died in prison at the age of 79. Poindexter's death will be investigated by a grand jury, and advocates continue to call for a reevaluation of his case.

The Black Panther Party for Self-Defense (BPP) was founded in 1966 to advocate for Black nationalism and armed self-defense against police brutality. It then dissolved in 1982 partially because of differences within the group.
