Escalating Violence Against Black Tunisians and Migrants in Tunisia
Violence against Black people in Tunisia has escalated following President Kais Saied's warning about changing the country's "demographic make-up". Black sub-Saharan Africans have faced round-ups, evictions, and attacks by mobs. Tunisia's own native Black population, comprising around 10 to 15 percent of the country's population, is now bracing for the assault. The 2018 law criminalizing racism has had limited impact due to a lack of implementation and training for law enforcement. Tunisian nationalists are even calling for the law to be repealed. The situation has worsened, with racism becoming more pronounced, leaving Black Tunisians feeling tired and pessimistic about the future.
