Study finds NICE breast cancer criteria miss most young at-risk women
Cambridge and ICR researchers say NICE's current referral criteria miss up to 95% of women under 50 who will develop breast cancer within 10 years; a new risk model called Boadicea could identify eight times as many at-risk young women, most of whom have no family history. The findings argue for a broader risk assessment to enable earlier prevention or treatment, but NICE warns that there is not yet enough evidence to change guidelines and notes resource and feasibility concerns; calls for investment in family-history services.
