Hassan Kariem, 42, died after being ejected from the Goliath roller coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia on Monday. The incident, which injured four others, has led to temporary closures of similar rides across the US. SeaWorld Orlando has shut down its Mako coaster, also built by Bolliger & Mabillard, for inspection, while other Florida parks remain open but under scrutiny.
Carowinds' Fury 325 roller coaster was closed after a large crack was discovered in a support beam holding up part of the track. The roller coaster's manufacturer, Bolliger & Mabillard (B&M), is known for producing safe rides and has never had a catastrophic failure on one of its coasters. Inspectors from the North Carolina Department of Labor are investigating the cause of the crack. B&M has not commented publicly on the support beam failure, and it is unclear how long the ride will be out of commission. Carowinds has three other B&M roller coasters.
