Canadians Cut Visits to U.S. Metros by 42%, Study Finds
A University of Toronto study using a cell‑phone mobility tool finds Canadians reduced visits to U.S. metropolitan areas by about 42% year over year (Apr 2024–Mar 2026), far above the 25% drop shown in official border crossings. The researchers caution the data capture freight movement and Canadians living temporarily in the U.S., with declines spanning major cities and tourist hotspots, possibly tied to tariffs and stricter border enforcement under the Trump 2.0 era. Canadian government data also show a 25% fall in Canadian-resident return trips in 2025, and a 7.5% drop in U.S. visits to Canada, underscoring broader shifts in cross-border travel and economic ties.
