Multilingualism linked to slower brain ageing, study finds

A study presented at a neuroscience conference reports that speaking more languages is associated with younger-appearing brains. Using magnetoencephalography and AI to estimate brain age, researchers analyzed 728 participants and a second group of 144, finding that each additional language and earlier second-language acquisition correlate with a smaller brain-age, up to about 13 years younger for those fluent in four languages. While the study accounted for age, sex and education, experts caution that lifestyle and other factors could influence the results, though the findings support language-learning as a potential strategy for maintaining brain health.

Creative Hobbies May Help Keep Your Brain Young and Healthy

A study by international scientists found that engaging in creative activities like dance, art, music, or gaming can positively impact brain health, making the brain appear younger and potentially slowing its ageing process. The more individuals practice their art, the more their brain age is reduced, highlighting creativity as a biological pathway to brain resilience and well-being.

"Midlife Brain Health: Predicting and Preventing Cognitive Decline"

A new review of human and animal studies suggests that middle age marks a shift in brain ageing, with significant molecular, cellular, and structural changes linked to cognitive decline. Upping fiber intake and exercising in midlife have been linked to improvements in brain function and reduced rates of dementia. Supplementation with inulin, a plant fiber supplement, has been shown to improve memory and overall brain function in people in their sixties. Additionally, regular exercise in middle age can protect against future cognitive decline, with high levels of physical activity linked to better brain health in later life.
