Unraveling the Mechanisms of Fear in the Brain

Neurobiologists at the University of California San Diego have identified the brain biochemistry and neural circuitry responsible for stress-induced generalized fear experiences, shedding light on how fear responses could be prevented. Their research, published in Science, revealed a switch in neurotransmitters in the dorsal raphe area of the brain, leading to generalized fear responses. By suppressing the gene responsible for the synthesis of GABA neurotransmitters, the researchers were able to prevent the mice from acquiring generalized fear, offering potential insights for interventions in related disorders such as PTSD.
