Chrissie Hynde Breaks Camera-Shyness for Definitive Pretenders Doc at TIFF
At TIFF, Chrissie Hynde discusses finally allowing a definitive Pretenders documentary by Joss Crowley, which pairs rare archive footage and Stan Tippins' diaries to trace the band’s late-70s to early-80s rise, the heartbreak of James Honeyman-Scott's death, and the ensuing turmoil. Hynde, notoriously camera-shy, appears only in the film's final interview, insisting the story stay focused on the band rather than 'women in rock,' while Crowley pieces together an intimate portrait that leans on archival material rather than on Hynde’s on-camera presence.
