Global Cardiologists Redefine Heart Failure to Move Beyond Ejection Fraction
Major international cardiology organizations have published a new consensus definition for heart failure in the journal Circulation. The update challenges the traditional reliance on ejection fraction (EF) as the sole diagnostic metric, arguing that a normal EF does not necessarily rule out the condition. The revised framework emphasizes a broader clinical assessment, including imaging and blood work, and introduces 18 distinct categories of underlying causes to improve diagnosis and treatment.
