Historic US Offshore Wind Farm Powers the Grid for the First Time
The first commercial-scale offshore wind farm in the United States, called South Fork Wind, has begun sending electricity to the grid off the coast of New York. Developed by Ørsted and Eversource, the wind farm will consist of 12 turbines and is expected to generate 132 megawatts of offshore wind energy, powering over 70,000 homes. This milestone marks a significant step in the country's transition to clean energy and supports New York's plan to install 9 gigawatts of offshore wind by 2035. Despite recent setbacks in the industry, such as project cancellations, offshore wind remains a key solution to address climate change and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
