Antarctica's Concordia Station Records a -119.4°F Cold Spell, 16-Year Low

While much of the Northern Hemisphere sweltered, Antarctica's Concordia Station recorded -119.4°F (-84.1°C) on July 18, 2026—the coldest reading there in 16 years and among the lowest reported anywhere on Earth since 2012. Scientists attribute the extreme cold to polar winter, high elevation, and a stable, dry air mass under a persistent high-pressure pattern that created a temperature inversion. Although remarkable, the reading is not a world record—the all-time low remains -128.6°F at Vostok in 1983—and scientists emphasize that such events reflect natural seasonal cycles rather than a broader trend. Concordia, a France-Italy station at about 3,200 meters, is a key site for climate and atmospheric research and a testing ground for long-duration isolation experiments.

"Colorado Braces for Record Cold and Heavy Snowfall"

Denver tied a 94-year-old cold record on Monday with temperatures only reaching a high of 2 degrees, making it the coldest Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Denver history. The last time a high temperature this cold was recorded on Jan. 15 was in 1930. Although temperatures didn't break the 1888 record for the lowest-ever temperature, they dipped to 7 below zero, bringing extremely cold temperatures and dangerous wind chill to Colorado over the holiday weekend.
