Fire whirls could speed oil spill cleanup while cutting pollution
Scientists demonstrated giant fire whirls that spin burning oil more efficiently, burning crude about 40% faster and producing 40% less soot, with up to 95% fuel-use efficiency versus traditional in-situ burns; the approach could speed cleanup and cut pollution, but requires precise wind and oil-layer conditions and might be deployed via portable systems in the future.
