Researchers have developed a new theory that allows them to determine the performance capacity of complex neural networks in recognition tasks. The theory provides a detailed description of the connection between the geometric representation of objects in biological and artificial neural networks and the networks' performance. By studying the manifold representations in neural networks, the researchers found that the mean radius and number of dimensions of the manifolds decrease in deeper layers of the network, accompanied by an increased classification capacity. The study also considers correlations between different object representations, showing that axis correlations increase performance capacity while centroid correlations decrease it. This research contributes to the understanding of neural networks and their ability to perform various tasks.
