"Groundbreaking Computer-Generated Image Reveals Eerie Likeness of Supermassive Black Hole"

The first computer visualization of a black hole, created by French cosmologist Jean-Pierre Luminet in 1979, remarkably resembled the actual image of a black hole captured by the Event Horizon Telescope in 2019. This visualization was based on the equations of general relativity, which describe how gravity affects objects near a black hole. Luminet's simulation showed a small ring of light around a black circle, accurately representing the supermassive black hole at the center of the galaxy M87. This achievement demonstrates the long tradition of using computers to generate images of black holes, dating back to the 1970s, and the complex nature of understanding and visualizing these enigmatic cosmic phenomena.
