Conquest Man Recreated: 11th-Century Barton Burial Faces Come to Life
Researchers used osteology, ancient DNA and isotope analysis to digitally reconstruct Conquest Man from a 1079 burial at St Peter’s Church in Barton-upon-Humber. The portrait depicts a stocky, 50–60-year-old man about 1.5m tall, likely of Scandinavian origin, who lived through the Norman Conquest, illustrating an ordinary person amid 11th-century upheaval. The remains are on display, and the project highlights Barton’s broader heritage and research opportunities during Heritage Open Days.
