Despite a tight IT labor market and a large number of job openings, tech company layoffs continue in Q2 2023 as businesses look to optimize their cost structures or adjust their market or growth plans. Many CEOs cite hiring too many employees during the pandemic as a main reason for letting employees go now. Some companies explain layoffs as part of a plan to reorganize to better meet customer requirements or to take better advantage of newer technologies such as the cloud. Amazon's Q1 earnings beat expectations, but stock fluctuates.

Amazon's first quarter earnings beat expectations, but cautious comments regarding a slowdown in its key Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud unit saw the stock reverse all of these gains in extended trading. Amazon CFO Brian Olsavsky told investors on the company's earnings call AWS customers are continuing "optimizations" in their spending and guided to a notable slowdown in growth from the segment, spooking investors. Revenue in Amazon's AWS unit grew 16% during the first quarter, down from an annual growth rate of 37% seen in the same quarter last year.
