The United States Space Force says it has deployed space-control weapons into orbit with offensive and defensive capabilities, arguing these tools are needed to contest and protect space assets as China and Russia expand counterspace capabilities, underscoring space as a critical national security domain.
The BBC outlines how space is becoming a wartime domain, with cyberattacks on satellite networks, risky satellite proximity maneuvers and jamming as counterspace tactics, plus discussions of space-based weapons and nuclear possibilities. The piece notes interceptions of European satellites, the risk of debris from kinetic attacks (Kessler syndrome), and the push to deploy defensive “guardian” satellites to safeguard vital space infrastructure while acknowledging the uncertainty and planning needed for worst‑case scenarios.
In his final address as Space Force chief, Gen. Chance Saltzman warns that war could move into orbit, pushing the service to build capable, combat-ready space forces and resilient satellite constellations. He outlines a shift toward space control, emphasizes deterrence based on capability rather than declarations, calls for stronger allied cooperation, and cautions that complex interoperability and procurement challenges require steady funding, long-term planning, and realistic expectations as Lt. Gen. Douglas Schiess prepares to take over.
