Ex-hospital chief stunned by staff complacency after Letby arrest
Former Countess of Chester Hospital CEO Dr Susan Gilby says she was astonished by a general feeling of complacency after Lucy Letby’s arrest, contrasting with expectations of shock. The Thirlwall Inquiry found governance failures and a culture that protected staff over patient safety, with hospital executives not expecting the police investigation to lead to charges. Gilby had commissioned governance reviews and later received £1.4m in unfair dismissal compensation amid ongoing inquiries and reviews.
