The Ancient Moons of Saturn: A Reflection of the Planet's Age

A team of astronomers led by Emily Wai Wong has used high-resolution simulations and improved estimates of Trans-Neptunian Object populations to establish age limits for Saturn's largest moons. The study found that the five heavily cratered regular satellites of Saturn are between 4.1 and 4.4 billion years old, with the two innermost moons appearing younger than the outer three. These findings have implications for our understanding of moon formation and tidal evolution in the outer Solar System. The research also provides a framework for studying the evolution of satellites around other gas giants in the Solar System.
