The Jets crown their training-camp Campies, with Team MVP Garrett Wilson and Most Impressive David Bailey leading the awards; the piece also notes Isaiah Williams' evolving role, injuries to Kenyon Sadiq and D'Angelo Ponds affecting depth, and kicking uncertainty after Cade York's release as Week 1 approaches.
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn tempered the hype around rookie David Bailey during a joint practice with the Buccaneers, stressing that while Bailey has elite quickness, the defense must improve run fits and overall discipline; Glenn says they’ll coach Bailey through mistakes as New York remains focused on building a cohesive 11-man unit.
Jets rookie edge rusher David Bailey dominated Buccaneers right tackle Luke Goedeke in the Jets’ joint practice, showing explosive edge ability after a 0-sack season. He reportedly won nearly every rep against Goedeke in team and individual drills, a notable feat given Goedeke’s 2025 performance (zero sacks, strong pass-blocking grade). Bailey’s standout camp play signals a potential early impact for New York as he competes against an established blocker.
After three days of New York Jets practices, Geno Smith has emerged as the steadying force at quarterback, while rookie David Bailey and Adonai Mitchell have flashed as playmakers; Kenyon Sadiq is emerging as a matchup-worthy tight end, but D'Angelo Ponds' calf injury complicates his nickel job bid, and Will McDonald and Andre Cisco have had slower starts with room to improve.
David Bailey, the Jets' top pick in the 2026 NFL Draft and a premier edge rusher, stood out on Day Two of training camp, signaling he could be an immediate impact player and a cornerstone for a defense that lacks other standout pass-rushing options.
The Jets opened Florham Park camp with a clear plan for rookie David Bailey to adapt to NFL defense, emphasizing disciplined reads, balance, and using his quickness. Day 1 showed Bailey staying true to reads on backside edge and pressuring Geno Smith, signaling progress as the coaching staff aims to mold him into a 11-on-11 defender. Geno had a mixed day, Chase Curtis impressed at tight end, and early injury notes include Ossai on PUP and D’Angelo Ponds with a calf issue ahead of Day 2.
Jets rookie minicamp offered a taste of a new offense under Frank Reich with Cade Klubnik taking most QB reps and learning to operate within configured buckets, while edge rusher David Bailey showed versatility to play outside linebacker in a 3-4 and defensive end in a 4-3 alongside Will McDonald. The team is weighing veteran QB options (including Russell Wilson) but has not committed, and other highlights included D’Angelo Ponds’ early impressions, a kicking competition among Krieg, Ferrin and York, and various tryouts and non-rookie veterans in attendance.
Jets coach Aaron Glenn downplayed Bailey’s run-defense concerns and outlined a plan to use the Stanford product as a versatile defender—outside linebacker in base packages and defensive end in four-down sub-packages—potentially pairing him with Will McDonald. Bailey, who starred at Texas Tech with 14.5 sacks, 19.5 tackles for loss and 10 forced fumbles, is focused on improving both run defense and the pass rush as he enters rookie minicamp and the Jets’ evolving defensive scheme.
Jets sign No. 2 overall pick David Bailey to a rookie contract. Bailey, a standout pass rusher who posted 14.5 sacks and 19.5 TFL in 2025 and earned All-American honors, was praised by coach Aaron Glenn for his first-step quickness and power rush; the Jets’ staff also has familiarity with Bailey from Stanford days, making him a key addition to upgrade their pass rush.
The Jets selected David Bailey second overall over Arvell Reese, but the broader NFL view suggests Reese had been the consensus favorite for months. Late-Bailey buzz appears to have stemmed from media polling of scouts and executives rather than Jets leaks, with ESPN’s Schrager noting there were no leaks from Florham Park. The article argues that most NFL teams would have made the same call, meaning Bailey’s selection was less shocking in hindsight and that the Jets’ thought process wasn’t as far-fetched as fan sentiment suggested.
Bailey initially thought the Jets wouldn’t draft him after they canceled his pre-draft visit, but his prior interactions with the team and the Jets’ No. 2 selection showed the meeting wasn’t decisive, and Bailey was chosen at No. 2.
The Jets surprised many by drafting David Bailey second overall over Arvell Reese, triggering fan skepticism. Bailey brings elite athleticism and production (NCAA-high 14.5 sacks in 2025) and, according to a data-driven analysis, outperformed Reese on a composite “Big 4 Score” tied to NFL success (pass-rush win rate, pressure rate, sack rate, and overall PFF grade). While Reese has a high ceiling, Bailey’s proven production and favorable analytics suggest a potentially franchise-altering edge rusher, offering Jets fans a data-backed silver lining despite the initial controversy.
The New York Jets selected Texas Tech edge rusher David Bailey with the second overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, betting on his prolific college production (29 sacks over four seasons, including 14.5 sacks and 19.5 TFL at Tech last year) and strong combine showing (4.50 40). Bailey, who earned first-team All-American honors and Big 12 DL of the Year, expressed gratitude and eagerness to work, emphasizing the rush moment's impact and his readiness to contribute. The pick makes him the Jets’ highest-drafted defensive player since 1967 and the first Tech edge drafted by the Jets in the common-draft era, with hopes of pairing him on the edge with Will McDonald IV to bolster the defense.
The New York Jets used the No. 2 overall pick to select Texas Tech edge rusher David Bailey, who led the nation with 14.5 sacks in 2025, addressing their pass-rush need after a pre-draft visit was canceled; the pick followed the Raiders' selection of Fernando Mendoza, and New York still has the No. 16 pick to come later in the draft.
With the Raiders set to pick Mendoza first, the Jets reportedly are deciding between Arvell Reese and Texas Tech defensive end David Bailey at No. 2. A Texas Tech plane departure photo showing a large jet and a jet emoji has sparked speculation that Bailey is the Jets’ target, a theory reinforced by SB Nation’s mock draft.
