Brat Confirmed as US Ambassador to Australia Amid Tariff Tensions
Former Virginia congressman Dave Brat has been confirmed as the US ambassador to Australia, filling a post vacant for 18 months. Appointed by President Donald Trump, Brat is viewed as a key figure who can bridge the gap between the White House and Canberra. His appointment arrives amid strained relations due to a 12.5% tariff on Australian goods and ongoing debates over the AUKUS defense pact. While Brat is a free-trade advocate, he has also defended the administration’s tariff strategy as a necessary economic reset.
