Vrabel Keeps Patriots' Roster in Motion Ahead of Season Opener

Patriots coach Mike Vrabel says he loves the current roster but the evaluation isn’t finished after the initial 53-man cut, as New England continues shuffling the roster with waiver adds (Cameron Latu, Darius Muasau), IR moves (Bryce Baringer, Khalil Jacobs), and in-season acquisitions (Corey Kiner, Walter Rouse, Jaylen Reed) while trading Kayshon Boutte. The goal is to build depth before the Sept. 9 opener vs. Seattle, with more tweaks possible.

Patriots' depth under the microscope after lopsided Browns preseason loss

New England sat most starters and was routed 37-13 by Cleveland, exposing depth issues on both lines and in the backfield and triggering questions about roster construction ahead of final cuts. The RB3 contest is muddled (Hassan Haskins looked solid; others struggled), Gabe Jacas continues to flash but repeatedly loses contain, and cornerback depth without Christian Gonzalez remains a concern. Haack vs Baringer at punter looms, Kyle Williams shows a valuable deep-threat skill, Namdi Obiazor flashed on defense, Behren Morton had a rough night, and injuries plus cut-down deadlines put extra pressure on decisions to trim to 53.

Two preseason games into training camp, New England’s projection for the 53-man roster centers on thin depth across several positions, forcing tough cut decisions ahead of the Aug. 30 deadline. The article lays out a QBs trio (Maye, DeVito, Morton), three running backs (Stevenson, Henderson, Haskins), one fullback (Gilliam), six receivers with Kayshon Boutte in a trade-intrigue scenario, and a tight end group of Henry and Raridon. It highlights concerns along the offensive line and defense, including depth at edge, linebacker, cornerback, and safety, with injuries and camp performances potentially driving late moves or practice-squad elevations.

Patriots' depth tested as backups spark and stumble against Eagles

Patriots win 24-21 in the second preseason game, but depth issues showed up on defense (tackling, edge pressure, and coverage at linebacker), the injury-hit offensive line, and limited early work for some backups. Still, second-year receivers flashed (Kyle Williams and Efton Chism), Lan Larison boosted the third-back spot, Behren Morton served as emergency punter and helped drive the late scoring march, and Andy Borregales was perfect after a rough previous outing, leaving questions about roster depth ahead of the final preseason games.

Orioles land Jake Rogers to shore up catching depth

Baltimore acquired catcher Jake Rogers from Detroit in exchange for minor league right-hander Zane Barnhart after Rogers was designated for assignment. The veteran backstop provides defensive upside and added depth behind Adley Rutschman or Eduardo Basallo, addressing a catching situation hampered by injuries to the Orioles’ top two catchers. Rogers is on a $3.05 million contract with about $1 million remaining this season; he hit .161 in 36 games this year and posted mixed defensive numbers, but could serve as a solid backup option if one of Baltimore’s catchers is sidelined.
