Controversy Surrounds Israeli Settlement Repeal in West Bank.

A far-right minister in Israel's government has hailed the repeal of legislation that ordered the evacuation of four West Bank settlements as a step towards re-occupying and resettling the Gaza Strip, a move that she acknowledged would cause "many casualties." The law repeals the clauses of the Disengagement Law that banned Israelis from the area where the settlements of Homesh, Ganim, Kadim and Sa-Nur once stood, paving the way for settlers to return. The repeal was met with fierce criticism from the international community, including from Israel's closest ally, the United States.

Israeli Settlement Policies Draw Criticism from US and Opposition Leaders

The US has summoned Israel's ambassador to the State Department in protest of the Knesset's passage of a law that will allow the resettlement of evacuated areas of the northern West Bank. The law repeals the clauses of the 2005 Disengagement Law that banned Israelis from the area where the settlements of Homesh, Ganim, Kadim, and Sa-Nur once stood. The US is "extremely troubled" by the legislation, which it says is inconsistent with the commitments Israel made to the US and participating countries at the Sharm el-Sheikh regional summit on Sunday. The move marks a further deterioration in relations between the Biden administration and the hard-line Netanyahu government.

Israel Repeals Disengagement Law, Allowing Return to West Bank Settlements.

The Knesset has repealed the Disengagement Law that banned Israelis from four northern West Bank settlements, paving the way for settlers to return. The law applies to those areas only, and the head of the IDF Central Command will still need to sign a military order allowing Israelis to return to those areas. The repeal will bolster the coalition’s efforts to legalize a wildcat outpost currently occupying the site of Homesh and a yeshiva that has been built there. Critics warn that the law could lead to de facto annexation of large parts of the West Bank, undermining Israel’s status as a Jewish and democratic state.
