NVIDIA Data Shows Wayland and X.Org Latency Parity on Linux Desktops
NVIDIA presented scientific latency tests at XDC 2026, finding that Wayland and X.Org performance is now nearly identical. Using a micro-controller and light sensor, the study measured key press to presentation times on an RTX 5070. Results showed no clear winner, with Variable Refresh Rate significantly improving responsiveness for both systems. The data also confirmed that XWayland no longer introduces the extra frame delays seen in previous iterations.
