Final Week Showdown: MLB Playoff Picture Tightens as Divisions and Wild Cards Dangle
Six teams have clinched a playoff spot and 6 spots remain, with 17 teams still mathematically alive as the 2026 season heads into its final week. The Rays have clinched the AL East and are chasing the No. 1 seed (and possibly the best record), while the Yankees and Red Sox are positioned to snag the top wild-card spot. In the NL, the Braves have clinched the NL East but are eyeing the No. 2 seed, and the Dodgers, Brewers, Cubs, Phillies and Padres are all jockeying for seeds and byes. Other hopefuls include the Blue Jays, White Sox, Diamondbacks, Guardians, Astros, Orioles and Mariners. Milestones add drama, with Yordan Alvarez pursuing the AL Triple Crown and Pete Crow-Armstrong nearing a 40-40 season, as teams battle for October access in next week’s Wild Card Series.
