Nepal's Glacial Flood Crisis: Drone Relief, Humanitarian Aid, and National Mourning

A glacial collapse on August 26, 2026, triggered catastrophic flash floods along the Nepal-China border, killing over 1,300 people and leaving more than 5,000 missing. Chinese-made DJI drones are now critical for delivering food and recovering bodies in inaccessible areas, while international aid groups focus on child welfare and trafficking prevention. Nepal observed a national day of mourning on September 7, with rescue efforts continuing in hydropower tunnels.

Chinese hobby drone used in Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Chinese-made DJI commercial drones, costing around $2,000 or less, are being used by both Ukrainian and Russian troops in the ongoing war in Ukraine. The drones are easy to fly, widely available online and in electronics stores, and are popular worldwide among civilians who fly drones for fun. The drones are being modified to carry small explosives and grenades, and are used for reconnaissance and directing artillery fire. DJI announced in April 2022 that it would stop selling drones to Ukraine or Russia because they were not intended to be used for military activities.
