Russia Designates Nobel Prize-Winning Journalist Dmitry Muratov as "Foreign Agent"

Dmitry Muratov, a prominent Russian journalist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, has been labeled a "foreign agent" by the Russian government, despite previously being praised for his principled reporting. The designation imposes strict rules on his political activity and bars him from public life, with any mention of him requiring reference to his status. The term "foreign agent" is seen as a smear tactic to punish independent voices in Russia. The country has increasingly cracked down on independent media since the start of the war in Ukraine, forcing many journalists to move abroad. The arrest of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich on espionage charges and the expulsion of POLITICO reporter Eva Hartog have also raised concerns about press freedom in Russia.

Muratov believes that as soon as the propaganda stops, the younger generation and everyone else with common sense will speak out. However, he has little optimism about the future and thinks that political repression will continue against all opponents of the regime.
