Ancient jar shelter: skeleton found inside a Roman dolium in Bulgaria hints at siege defense
Archaeologists in Deultum, Bulgaria uncovered a 1,600-year-old skeleton inside a giant Roman storage jar (a dolium) dating to about AD 400. The young man appears to have hidden inside the vessel during an enemy attack, with two iron knives and a belt found with the remains. Evidence of a nearby fire and chaotic deposition around the jar suggests a dramatic event; the skeleton has been moved to Sofia for analysis, and researchers plan further excavations of the Late Roman gate and turret where the find was made.
