At the San Sebastián Film Festival, Naomi Watts says standards for older women in film have improved, citing recent Emmys as heartening, while premiering Ben Shirinian’s The Housewife. Set in 1964 and based on a true story, the film follows a journalist who tracks a suspected Nazi officer living in New York, with Watts portraying Hermine, a wife who appears ordinary while concealing horrific secrets. She describes the role as deeply challenging and notes the importance of storytelling for minorities and LGBTQ representation, hoping the film sparks dialogue about history and how to avoid repeating past cruelties in today’s world.
