Rapid Surge in Drill Sergeant Deaths at Fort Jackson Raises Concerns
A second drill sergeant, Staff Sgt. Zachary L. Melton, has been found dead at Fort Jackson in South Carolina within eight days. The cause of death has not been provided, and the US Army Criminal Investigation Division is investigating. This marks the third death of a staff sergeant at the base this year. A study conducted in 2021 revealed that drill sergeants face significant mental health challenges, including depression, insomnia, anxiety disorders, burnout, and low morale. The study recommended policy changes to address workload and allow for sufficient recovery and sleep.
