Maricopa County Splits Authority Over Early Voting Between Recorder and Board

A yearlong dispute in Maricopa County ends with a settlement that assigns the Recorder’s Office led by Justin Heap authority over early voting sites, drop boxes, voter registration and related processes, while the Board of Supervisors retains control of Election Day operations and ballot counting; the two offices will jointly handle ballots and oversee a new voter-registration system through 2029, with the Board funding site numbers and Heap choosing locations, and a bipartisan early-election-board structure preserved to prevent disruption ahead of the primary, subject to formal adoption by the courts.

Federal Judge Upholds Georgia Voting Law Despite Legal Challenge

A federal judge has denied a bid to block Georgia's controversial voting law, ruling that lawsuits have yet to prove that the law is racially discriminatory. The decision allows the law's limitations on ballot drop boxes, voter ID requirements, and restrictions on providing water to voters in line to remain in place. The law, passed by the Republican-controlled Georgia General Assembly, created new regulations for absentee and early voting. The plaintiffs in the case argued that the law disproportionately affected Black voters, but the judge concluded that they failed to demonstrate racially discriminatory motivation. The case could go to trial in 2024.

"Democrats Fight to Restore Absentee Drop Boxes in Wisconsin"

The Elias Law Group, a national Democratic law firm, has filed a lawsuit in Wisconsin seeking to reinstate the use of drop boxes for absentee ballots. The practice was banned by the conservative majority of the Wisconsin Supreme Court last year, but with the upcoming shift to a liberal majority, the ruling may be reversed. The lawsuit argues that the prohibition on drop boxes burdens the right to vote and seeks to undo other requirements such as witness signatures and the correction of absentee ballot problems by Election Day. The case could potentially reach the state Supreme Court, which will have a liberal majority starting August 1st.
