COVID-19 viremia linked to deadly clots in new study
A study of 93 hospitalized COVID-19 patients shows that the virus in the bloodstream (viremia) is associated with higher clotting and death, likely via soluble thrombomodulin shed from damaged blood vessels. This mechanism could explain strokes, heart attacks, and pulmonary embolisms in non-ICU patients and suggests earlier anticoagulation might help, though causality isn’t proven and future research is needed to confirm applicability beyond COVID-19 and to account for vaccination-derived antibodies.
