The Unsustainable Rise of Employer-Sponsored Healthcare Costs

The average annual premium for employer-sponsored health insurance in the US has increased by 7% for both individual and family coverage, reaching $8,435 and $23,968 respectively, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. Workers are also contributing a greater amount to premiums, with their contributions now accounting for 16.6% of the overall premium. Rising healthcare costs and inflation, along with increased healthcare utilization rates and the consolidation of healthcare markets, are driving up premiums. The tight labor market is also a factor, as employers want to offer attractive benefits to attract talent. While deductible costs have slowed in recent years, the affordability of cost-sharing remains a concern for employees.
